What began in 1953 as a small gathering of passionate advocates has grown into Maine’s leading animal welfare network. For over 70 years, Maine Humane has evolved alongside the changing needs of animals and the organizations that serve them, always staying true to our core mission of collaboration and support.
Founded as the Maine Federation of Humane Societies (MFHS), uniting directors, shelter managers, ACOs, and volunteers for coordinated education, outreach, and advocacy.
MFHS incorporated as a nonprofit with tax-exempt status.
Administered the statewide Marjorie Johnstone CAP Program, distributing spay/neuter vouchers; 4,286 animals sterilized.
Began rebranding from MFHS to Maine Humane.
Program Milestones: Launched statewide community-cat tracking system and expanded resource-sharing model.
Statewide Pet Food Pantry Program established; became Greater Good Charities Ambassador and began receiving full truckloads from donors.
