Katie Hansberry

Maine State Director - Humane Society of the United States

Katie Hansberry joined the Humane Society of the United States in 2012 as their Maine State Director. A graduate of Bowdoin College, she excitedly returned to Maine in pursuit of her passion for helping animals. As Maine state director, she drives change for animals by leading state and local policy efforts, building strong relationships with key stakeholders, assisting with cruelty cases, and serving on the boards of the Maine Federation of Humane Societies and New England Federation of Humane Societies, as well as state wildlife rehabilitation and rabies working groups.

She has led numerous successful campaigns in Maine, including the passage of legislation ending the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores, prohibiting the sale of cosmetics tested on animals, and increasing funding for low-cost spay/neuter. Prior to joining HSUS, she was active in the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund at Boston College Law School and served as program coordinator of the Massachusetts Bar Association’s Animal Law Practice Group while working as a civil defense litigator. She lives in South Portland, Maine with her dogs, Phoebe and Ursula, and her cats, Ms. Biscuits and Lily.
