The Animal Welfare Advisory Council met on October 16th. The Council reviewed and edited two draft bills to be introduced for the next legislative session - one to allow for state licensure and oversight of dog kennels currently licensed by municipalities, and another to allow for rabies vaccinators to be trained and function without direct veterinary oversight when certain criteria are met. The updated language will be reviewed at November’s meeting.
Help Fix ME issued additional vouchers with money freed up during the last AWAC meeting. Outstanding expired vouchers will have their expiration date extended to December 31st to help folks who have not been able to secure a surgery appointment. The ACF Commissioner has signed off on the RFP, and it has now passed back to the Procurement Department.
The new dog licensing system was launched on October 14th. The site had over 1,000 registered users in just two days of being live, but due to some technical issues, online dog licensing is now delayed. The AWP and municipal clerks ask that you wait until the system is up and running again to register your dog online, rather than going to your town office, as they are very busy working on the upcoming election.
The new AWAC Public Comment Form was approved. If you are unable to make a meeting in person, please utilize their online form. Your comments will be shared with AWAC members for consideration, possible discussion and response. Please note that not all written comments will be shared and discussed during a future meeting.
The next AWAC meeting will be held on November 20th, 2024 at 1:30 PM.
