Maine Humane Updates
On February 12th, we hosted our first public meeting of 2025 at the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.
Our Board President, Katie Hansberry, provided an update on all things Maine Humane, including the launch of our new website and recent legislative developments.
Our guest speaker, Maddie Cyr from the Portland Public Health Division, delivered a detailed presentation on the effects of tobacco use on pets, particularly the impacts of secondhand and thirdhand smoke. She also highlighted the Maine QuitLink program and shared valuable resources for pet owners seeking to quit smoking.
Following Maddie’s presentation, Olivia Whitton, ARLGP’s Canine Manager, presented on Canine Population Management, offering an in-depth overview of their processes and procedures from intake to outcome.
During the open discussion, State Veterinarian Dr. Rachael Fiske addressed questions regarding the impact of H5N1 Avian Influenza, clarifying concerns for those working in shelters. Below, you will find recommendations for monitoring and responding to potential infections with avian influenza (H5N1) in cats for shelters, rescues, and access-to-care clinics.

The Animal Welfare Advisory Council did not meet for the month of January.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 19th at 1:30 PM.
